(AUGUST-2008) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC        The Gospel of Christ shines at the ROC.  Part of volunteering and supervising at the ROC includes simply standing back and happily watching the teens supervise themselves.  Recently we heard, for example, a teen humbly tell another teen, who was excessively gloating over a pool game victory, to remember Jesus’ humility as he came and died on the cross for all of us.  The teen who won, later won again, but this time, he humbly shook the hand of his opponent who lost.

Come and enjoy a brat, chips and soda.  The ROC teens will be at WalMart with a Brat Stand on August 9th from 10:30-2:00 and then at Glenn’s Brat Stand on Friday and Saturday, August 15th and 16th, 10:00-3:00 both days.  Helpers are greatly needed to run the brat stands.  Please call (206-9581 or 261-4444) or e-mail (wttnroc@sbcglobal.net) Pastor/Director Mueller to offer your help.

Remember that the ROC/Jerry Kastens Memorial Golf Outing is scheduled for Sunday, August 17th, at the Watertown Country Club with a 4:00 pm tee time. The cost will be $55.00 per golfer, and that includes green fees, team prizes will be drawn, flag prizes on each hole, door prizes, and buffet. Non-golfers can attend the buffet following the golfing for a cost of $16.00. We will be holding a silent auction along with the outing. If you wish to donate an item for the auction, please contact us. We are also looking for hole sponsors. The cost for a sponsorship is $50.00. We are also looking for door prize donations. Any questions or any other inquires or to register, please contact Dale Ninmann at 920-261-5719 or e-mail daleninmann@charter.net.

All proceeds from the above events will go to help fund the ROC.   Thanks so much for your support.

(JULY-2008) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC      Our Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center (THE ROC) for Youth could not stay open if it weren’t for our generous volunteers.  What amazes so many teens at THE ROC is that the volunteers give so much for nothing.  The philosophy of the world is to do only for those who can do something for you or out of whom you can get something.  Our volunteers are different!  The love of Christ living in the hearts of our volunteers is seen by the teens and they are deeply touched by it as we tell them how it is God’s grace, goodness and forgiveness in Christ which moves them to love unconditionally.   We thank our God everyday for our ROC volunteers.

Remember the ROC Rummage Sale will be held on July 24, 25 & 26 at Trinity/St. Luke’s School.  Please call Ruth Uttech (920-261-6772) or Pam Erdman (920-261-9674) with any questions regarding what we can accept or to indicate your willingness to volunteer. (Sorry but we have no place to store items until the sale.)  Note: We will begin receiving items on Sunday July 20.  Volunteers are greatly needed.  To volunteer or for more info., call Ruth Uttech 920-261-6772 or Pam Erdman at 920-261-9674.

A “ROC RELOCATION FUND” has been established to save such special gifts for when we need to relocate/renovate.  Such gifts can be sent to 1411 Wedgewood Dr., Watertown, WI. 53098.  Also, remember that you can stop by at the ROC anytime it’s open to visit or be considered for our volunteer staff.  Thanks so much for your support.  Contact info. for THE ROC and Pastor/Director Mueller:  920-261-4444 or 920-206-9581 or wttnroc@sbcglobal.net.  Also check out the web page www.thewttnroc.com.

(JUNE-2008) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC      “Hundreds of prophecies said a savior would come. (Acts 3:18, 1Corinthians 15:1-4) For each one to be complete, the odds were millions to one. Not just any man could begin to fill them all. Only God could give the greatest gift, this gift of love. (John 3:16)  (Chorus) You’re the One they said would come, And You gave Yourself for everyone. (2 Corinthians 5:15) You’re the One who IS love, (1John 4:8,16) You’re the One.”  These are lyrics of a song written by Michael Schroeder, a member of our church in Wisconsin Rapids.  14 ROC teens, 11 of which are unchurched, attended his concert as 4 ROC staff volunteers took them to one of our churches in Madison to hear such Scriptural and Gospel filled words put to such worshipful and beautiful music.

Remember the ROC GOLF EVENT is scheduled for Sunday, June 22nd, at the Watertown Country Club with a 4:00 pm tee time with a cost for both the golfing and buffet of $55.00. It will again be a 9 hole scramble with 5 person teams.  We would love to have any non-golfers attend the buffet following the golfing for a cost of $16.00.  A silent auction and sponsoring of holes is also part of the outing.  Help us find sponsors and auction items.  Sign up deadline for golf and meal is Monday, June 16th. All proceeds go to The ROC. Any question, any other inquires or to register, please contact Dale Ninmann at 920-261-5719 or e-mail daleninmann@charter.net.

Also, please prepare for the ROC Rummage Sale to be held on July 24, 25 & 26 at Trinity/St.

(MAY-2008) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC     Imagine getting invited to the Kings Palace! Who me? I have heard about the King but how will I fit in? I was so excited about the invitation that fitting in left my mind and I didn't care about what I was wearing either. After all, I heard that the King really cares more about me, the person - enough to give me this special invitation. Once I walked inside, I was in awe of this huge, magnificent place.  As I looked to the front of the church, I wondered who could be so important that they made statues of them. I suddenly became nervous about what was expected of me. Thoughts were racing through my head, so many people and things that I've never seen before - when do I stand - when do I sit - what are they reading? My friend, who brought me here, reassures me. They all begin to sing, excited I try to follow along, I still can't believe I'm here.  A group of kids stand up and sing to the rest of us, I think it sounds wonderful.  I can't wait to stand up and applaud after they are done.  My friend quietly tells me, "we don't do that here." I ask him why - he said "it's part of being solemn, and showing respect and honor to God." Now I'm more comfortable but also a little confused.  In the middle of this entirely different world, I try to listen to the King's messenger.  Why is he wearing all white with a purple scarf? What does all this mean? Now I have questions about what he is reading.  I wish I could ask him. Boy, I'm glad there is one person I know here. Walking out, I don't feel as out of place, and am very glad I came, but I do have a lot of things to ask PT (Pastor Mueller) when I see him at the ROC next time. I sure would like to try this experience again............

The King is Jesus and the Palace is St. Marks. The Messenger is Pastor Jensen. Todd Morris, one of our ROC staff recently invited some teens from the ROC to attend a Lenten service.  The statements above reflect how those teens felt and what they said.  We can learn so much from them about how to warmly welcome our guests and make them feel at home.  Many teens at the ROC are interested in what Jesus our King has to teach them but still feel much more comfortable learning at the ROC, due to feeling like they don't "fit in" at church.   What is always encouraging to our staff is seeing evidence that their faith is growing, and sometimes it's in the little things we see at the ROC.  What a privilege we have to be able to learn more about the King in the Palace every week and invite others to come with us also.

ROC teens will be serving at Ponderosa on Thursday, May 15th, 5-8 p.m.  The ROC GOLF EVENT will be held on Sunday, June 22nd at the Watertown Country Club. For more information, please contact Dale Ninmann at 920-261-5719 or daleninmann@charter.net.  The ROC RUMMAGE SALE will be held on July 24, 25, 26 at Trinity/St. Luke’s School.  To volunteer or for more info., call Ruth Uttech 920-261-6772 or Pam Erdman at 920-261-9674.

PAST ARTICLES

(JANUARY-2005 ) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC     Each month we hope to share with you some refreshing pebble from THE ROC, our Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center.  This last month the ROC celebrated its ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY (opened Dec. 3, 2003).  Thanks to all who helped prepare for the open house and all who donated all the delicious goodies.  At least 35 ROC youth participated in the ROC float for the city Christmas parade.  It was heart warming to also see youth, along the way, come out of the crowd and join the ROC float.  As was stated in the front page Daily Times article, the ROC has become a second home for many youth.  We pray that, through God’s Word overflowing at THE ROC, many youth will call heaven their home.

(FEBRUARY-2005) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC     As we celebrate the ROC being open for one year, we can’t help but give thanks to our gracious God and Lord.  By His grace through faith in Christ, eternal salvation is ours.  The ROC is giving us so many wonderful opportunities to share and live that Gospel.  The youth attendance continues to remain strong averaging 40-50 every night the ROC is open.  Over 50% of the youth are unchurched and so are their families.  So many young hearts and lives have already been impacted by the Gospel shared at the ROC.  Souls that were on their way to hell have come to know and believe in Christ and are now on their way to heaven.  Young people who were and are lost and confused are receiving the guidance and help they need to turn it around and live for their saving God.  Teens who were considering suicide due to having no hope are now seeing the certain hope which God alone can give.  Christian teens at the ROC are having opportunities to share and live their faith with the lost.  The ROC ministry is also making an impact elsewhere as churches from Green Bay, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Wasilla, Alaska, and Belle Plaine, Minnesota are thinking of opening a youth center or implementing ideas learned from the ROC.

(MARCH-2005) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC     By God’s grace, the ROC (Recreation & Outreach Center For Youth on S. Water St.) is a place where raw evangelism is taking place.  Many, many unchurched teens, who would not have been reached through other ways, are now hearing and being touched by the Gospel.  Many teens are looking to the ROC staff for help and guidance like “Mary” who wrote in an e-mail, “i would like to talk to you about one of my friends that goes to watertown high school who has talked to me and told me that she plans on killing herself before this summer comes.” Or like “Matt” who said, “I need your help.  I don’t know what true love is.  How do you know she is the one?”, or like Fred who says, “My best friend was just killed in a car accident, what do I do?  I’m so messed up and confused?”

The only threat to this tremendous ministry will be lack of funding.  So far no money has come from any of the budgets of the four organizing churches, St. John’s, St. Luke’s, St. Mark’s and Trinity.  Special gifts, however, from our churches, groups and individuals, along with the initial grants, have kept the ROC funded.  The ROC treasury, however, is diminishing.  We, therefore, continue to invite and encourage your generous donations for this unique and incredible outreach ministry.  We also appreciate the WELS Kingdom workers for taking on the ROC as a premier project and supporting it by matching $.25 of every dollar donated to the ROC.  ROC donations can be given through your church or, checks made out to the ROC, can be sent to our ROC treasurer at 601 Mary Knoll Lane, Watertown, WI. 53098 or to the director/pastor at 1411 Wedgewood Drive, Watertown, WI. 53098.  Thank you so much.

(APRIL-2005) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC     In order to help fund our Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center (ROC), we are having a pizza sale.  Please buy some pizzas using the order forms supplied.  Also, please help get the order forms out there so others can help.  As noted on the form, orders are to be submitted to the ROC (321 S. Water St.)  by Wednesday, April 6th and people can pick up their orders at EMIL'S on Monday, April 25th between 3-5:45 p.m.

Please note that all four Watertown WELS churches will soon need to review the ROC Ministry and decide whether or not to support it for another three years.  A proposal will be coming soon to congregational meetings.  Please look for the proposal and communicate with your ROC Board representative.  Those on the ROC Board are:  St. John’s – Don Bartz and Arlyn Boll;  St. Luke’s – Jerry Vomhof and Todd Kuehl; St. Mark’s – Todd Morris and Harold Peckham; Trinity – Dale Ninmann and Mark Pieper.  Advisory Members are:  Pastor Mark Gartner, Pastor Mike Jensen, Minister Jerry Kastens, Mr. Bill Schmidt (WELS Kingdom Workers) and Pastor Rodney Warnecke.

The ROC continues to help many youth in our community.  The numbers attending remain strong and, by God’s grace, many are hearing the Gospel who didn’t before.   Teens straying from the flock are also being found.  We rejoice with the angels in heaven “over one sinner who repents”.

(MAY-2005) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC     The success of our Watertown ROC (Recreation & Outreach Center) for Youth is being noticed by many.  Pastor Mueller has been giving presentations to WELS churches and groups, our seminary students in Mequon and various community groups.  When  and where else can we get to know and share the Gospel with so many unchurched teens.  Everyone is encouraged to stop down at the ROC to see what’s happening and view personally the opportunities for outreach.  You are also invited to talk to Pastor Mueller about being considered for our volunteer staff as more workers are greatly needed.

Please note that the ROC is now an approved organization for the Thrivent GivingPlus® Program.  This means that Thrivent will contribute $1 for every $2 donated by Thrivent members to the Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center (ROC) For Youth up to a $300 maximum supplement.  Donations for matching, therefore, can be for any amount up to $600 (or more).  Thrivent members can give to two approved organizations a year for matching.  Consider such a gift for matching for the ROC if you aren’t fully using this program yet.  Pick up a GivingPlus® form at the ROC today.

(JUNE-2005) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC     What a joy it is to see tough, hard and cold teens humbly repent of their sins and enjoy God’s forgiveness in Jesus.  This is an example of what we experience at our Watertown ROC (Recreation & Outreach Center) for Youth.  Never would we be able to reach such teens without this worthwhile ministry.  To God be the glory!

To help fund the ROC, proposals are now being brought to the congregations to look for their continued support.  The 2nd annual ROC Golf Outing will be held on Sunday, June 26th, 2005 at the Watertown Country Club.  The second annual ROC Rummage Sale will be on July 15+16.  Call Ruth Uttech at 920-261-6772 to volunteer your help and for more information.

To help promote the ROC, we have scheduled a ROCK Climbing Wall to be on the ROC parking lot on Friday, July 8th, 6-9 p.m.  All ages are invited to have fun trying to climb the ROCK wall.  We are looking for a group or individuals to sponsor the $525 for the wall so that the $5.00 per two climbs will go completely to the ROC.

Remember, you can stop by at the ROC anytime it’s open to visit or be considered for our volunteer staff.  Thanks so much for your support.

(JULY-2005) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC     Much Happening – Much Help Needed

What a joy to hear the other day at the ROC one of our Christian teens invite an unchurched teen to church.  Due to so many unchurched at the ROC, the evangelism opportunities to live our faith and share the Savior are incredible and numerous.  Stop by at the ROC anytime it’s open to visit or be considered for our volunteer staff.

The second annual ROC Rummage Sale will be on July 15+16, 8-4:40, at TSL Western Campus Gym.  Call Ruth Uttech at 920-261-6772 to volunteer your help, donate items and for more information.

To help promote the ROC, we have scheduled a ROCK Climbing Wall to be on the ROC parking lot on Friday, July 8th, 6-9 p.m.  All ages are invited to have fun trying to climb the ROCK wall.  The fee for the wall has been generously donated so that the  $5.00 per two climbs will go completely to the ROC.

Come and enjoy a brat, chips and soda at Glenn’s Brat Stand and help fund the ROC on Friday and Saturday, August 19th and 20th.  We also need many helpers to run the brat stand.  Please call (206-9581 or 261-4444) or e-mail (wttnroc@sbcglobal.net) Pastor/Director Mueller to offer your help.

(AUGUST-2005) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC        THANK YOU to all those who worked so hard to make the ROCK Climbing Wall at our Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center (ROC) for Youth a wonderful success.  The event helped get the word out about the ROC and provided many open doors for evangelism and a connection with the youth.  Due to generous donations, so many teens were overwhelmingly appreciative for being able to climb the wall which they had never done before.

A sincere and tremendous THANK YOU also to all those who helped in any way with the ROC Golf Outing and the ROC Rummage Sale.  With some matching funds from WELS Kingdom Workers and Thrivent, the total amount from both events for the ROC should come close to $15,000.

Come and enjoy a brat, chips and soda at Glenn’s Brat Stand and help fund the ROC on Friday and Saturday, August 19th and 20th, 10:00-3:00 both days.  We also need many helpers to run the brat stand.  Please call (206-9581 or 261-4444) or e-mail (wttnroc@sbcglobal.net) Pastor/Director Mueller to offer your help.

(SEPTEMBER-2005) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC        Our Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center (ROC) for Youth has become such a home for some teens that they remember and celebrate the anniversary of their first day at the ROC.  One teen said, “That’s the day my life changed from being made fun of all the time to being treated with respect at the ROC.  I thank Jesus and the ROC for that.”

As most of the teens who come to the ROC are unchurched, the ROC is an excellent place for Christians to evangelize by sincerely living and sharing their faith.  We invite you, therefore, to stop in to be considered for our volunteer staff.

Another way you can help with less commitment, is to let Pastor Mueller know you would like to share your gift of music/singing at the ROC or play a favorite inside game with some of the teens for an hour or so.  They would love it.  They also love treats and goodies.  For more information concerning being a part of the ROC mission and ministry or helping fund the ROC, please drop by at the ROC or  call Pastor Mueller at 206-9581.

(OCTOBER-2005) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC        The high number of teens attending our Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center (ROC) for Youth has made it critical that we have at least two adults at the ROC at all times.  Since we do not have enough volunteers at this time, we invite you to stop down at the ROC, talk to Pastor Mueller, experience the tremendous need to help teens and hopefully offer to be considered for our volunteer staff.  The ROC is an excellent place we as Christians can get into the world and share and live our faith.

Thanks to all those who helped with the Brat Stand at Glenn’s Market.  Thanks also to all those who came and enjoyed lunch and at the same time helped fund the ROC.  A total of  $1,407.38 was raised for the ROC from the Brat Stand.

(NOVEMBER-2005) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC        “Dear Lord, be merciful in my life and forgive me for everything I have done to hurt you and my parents.  Please help my roads in life not to be so rocky between me and my parents, my life in general and my friends.  Please God, remove in my life what is keeping me away from you.”  This prayer was written by an unchurched teen attending the ROC (Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center For Youth) after she expressed her depression and after the staff gave her some Bible passages to read and reflect upon.  Her guilty heart was relieved by forgiveness in Christ and she is, according to God’s will and to His glory, trying to work at the relationships she mentioned.  Such counseling is going on all the time at the ROC as teens share their troubles and ask questions about life.

To continue to help our children, the ROC has scheduled a Gang Prevention Presentation by Sgt. Gee of the police department for anyone and everyone.  The presentation will be held on Monday, Nov. 7th, 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church (605 S. Fourth Street, Watertown).

Drop down at the ROC and offer to be considered for our volunteer staff.  Without such volunteers, we can’t keep the ROC open.  We need you.

(DECEMBER-2005) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC        At a Bible/Talk Time at the ROC, where Pastor Mueller was sharing forgiveness, a teen asked, “How do you really know you are forgiven by God?”  This is the question above all others, isn’t it?  What a joy to tell the teen that we know because of Jesus cross and His empty tomb and how God says they mean real & complete forgiveness for us.  The teen’s face lit up because she was never sure of forgiveness because she though it was on her.  Knowing, now, that forgiveness rests on what God did, and not on what we do, gave the teen real freedom from guilt and a joyful anticipation of heaven.  Such conversations go on all the time at the ROC.

Please continue to support this wonderful work at the ROC.  ROC donations can be given through your church or, checks made out to the ROC can be sent to our ROC treasurer at 601 Mary Knoll Lane, Watertown, WI. 53098 or to the director/pastor at 1411 Wedgewood Drive, Watertown, WI. 53098.   Also please note that the ROC is an approved organization for the Thrivent GivingPlus® Program.

We also thank those who have recently come to the ROC sharing their gifts with the teens, such as the two teenage bands, the wood burning artist, the astronomers and others.  Share a gift God has given to you by talking with Pastor Mueller.   Thanks for everything.

(JANUARY-2006) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC        Recently, during a Bible/Talk Time at the ROC, Pastor Mueller was teaching the teens about prayer: to whom to pray, for what to pray and how to pray.  He asked the teens for what they wanted to pray.  One teenage girl said she would like to pray for her mother to be dead.  The teen felt her mother didn’t care about her because her mother, two years ago, had deserted her by leaving her and her dad and had moved to another town.  What a wonderful opportunity it was to present God’s love and forgiveness, that even though we have often deserted our Lord by sinning, He still forgives us for Jesus sake.  Empowered by God’s love, the girl no longer hates her mother.  Instead, she phoned her mother, shared that forgiveness and they got together for Christmas.  The greater joy is found in the eternal salvation of this teenage girl and how she is now in God’s kingdom through the Savior.  Continue to pray for and support the ROC so that many more teenagers can come to know and believe in Christ.

We also invite everyone to stop in at the ROC anytime to visit and we encourage you to check out our new and updated web page, www.thewttnroc.com.  On the web page you will see many pictures of the hundreds of teens who attend the ROC.  You will also learn about our Adult Volunteer program and Junior Volunteer Program.  Calendars, wish lists and so much more can also be found on the web page.  Check it out at www.thewttnroc.com.

(MARCH-2006) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC        “How do I reach my teenage son/daughter?  He/She seems so distant.”  “How do I reach out to teens?  They scare me.”  Such questions are often on the minds of parents and adults as they think about teenagers and want to relate to them.  We often see parents and adults handling teens with all law or with teen stereotypes in mind.  Teens are people, who, like us, want to be given a chance and, deep down, want to be properly disciplined, needed and loved.  Sometimes adults will judge teens by their looks without even talking to them.  Some of the neatest teens we’ve met at the ROC, however, are those who, by their looks, will repulse most.  As we work at the ROC, we remember how repulsive we were due to our sin, but how God, by His grace and in Christ, made us His holy people and nation.  May our thankfulness to God for our rebirth into His kingdom move us to reach out to each individual, no matter how they look or who they are.  At the ROC, we are able to share the Gospel of our Savior with so many teens we wouldn’t otherwise be able to reach, teens who are “like sheep without a shepherd”.  Please continue to pray for and support the ROC, our Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center for Youth.

(APRIL 2006) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC        What a life-like lesson the teens were exposed to one night at our Watertown ROC (Recreation & Outreach Center) for Youth as Mr. Todd Morris, a ROC volunteer, dressed up as a homeless person and walked around the ROC for an hour.  Todd was unrecognizable and held up a sign that read, “Will Work For Food”.  We were pleased to see how most teens had great compassion for the “homeless person” even giving him their last change and one even giving him his coat off his back.  Finally, some teens invited him inside, out of the cold, where a Bible/Talk Time was held.  As Todd revealed himself, Pastor Mueller centered on God’s love for all and His death on the cross as full payment for our sins even when we were “detestable,” sinful by nature, before him.  It is God’s love for all that empowers us to reach out to all, no matter who they are.

Be Informed & Aware.  Another great lesson, organized by The ROC Board and Staff for ALL parents, grandparents, teens, ministers, teachers and anyone interested in helping the teens in our community and their families will be held on Mon., April 10th, 7:00-8:30 p.m. at St. Mark’s Parish Center.  This presentation by Pam and Phil Merten will give an overview of all kinds of addictions and how to recover from them.  Pam is a licensed Professional Counselor with Rogers Memorial Hospital and Life-Span Family Counseling Services.  Pastor Merten is our WELS Chaplain with Wisconsin Lutheran Institutional Ministries and Grace Oasis, a Christian fellowship and outreach program for men, women and teens in recovery.

Please continue to support the ROC as your donations are its main funding.  Donations can be dropped off at the ROC or sent to 601 Mary Knoll Lane, Watertown, WI 53098 or 1411 Wedgewood Drive, Watertown, WI 53098.  We thank our Lord God for your generosity.

(MAY 2006) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC        Recently a rash of break-ins occurred in Watertown.  Among the victims was the ROC (Watertown Recreational & Outreach Center for Youth) as the door was smashed down and vending machines and the office broken into.  As the teens came to the ROC the next day, they were devastated and upset since, for many, the ROC has become their home away from home.  Our Bible/Talk time that evening dealt with God’s promise that “all things God works for the good of those who love him.”  We gave thanks that computers, TVs, video games, and pool tables weren’t vandalized.  We gave thanks that all that was missing was mostly food and drink.  We prayed for the thieves asking God to lead them to repentance and forgiveness through Christ and a desire to right the wrong.  The Bible/Talk time revealed to many what it feels like to be violated in such a way and, out of love for Christ, to “Love your neighbor as yourself”.  What a lesson it turned out to be and what spiritual growth has already occurred through this trial.

Remember the ROC GOLF EVENT is scheduled for Sunday, June 25th, at the Watertown Country Club with a 4:30 pm tee time. It will again be a 9 hole scramble with 5 person teams. Please see a special note for the details. Remember that non-golfers can attend the buffet following the golfing for a cost of $15.00 and a silent auction and sponsoring of holes is also part of the outing.  Any questions or any other inquires please contact Dale Ninmann at 920-261-5719 or daleninmann@charter.net.

Also, please prepare for  the ROC fundraiser/rummage sale to be held on July 21 & 22 at Trinity/St. Luke’s School.  Please see another special note for the details. Volunteers are needed.  To volunteer or for more info., call Ruth Uttech 920-261-6772 or Pam Erdman at 920-261-9674.

(JULY-2006) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC     Is it all worth it?  After almost three years of operation, it is important for us to ask the tough questions.  Is our Watertown ROC (Recreation & Outreach Center) for Youth accomplishing what we had hoped and prayed for?  Are souls being reached and saved through the Gospel shared through the ROC ministry?  Are all the offerings, gifts and time worth it?  To answer that question for yourself, it is extremely important to visit the ROC or talk to someone who has visited the ROC.  When the ROC is open, it is constantly busy and active.  Sometimes the noise level is high simply due to the amount of teens gathered in one place.  As you look around at the ROC, you see churched and unchurched interacting and communicating.  As you watch and hear the staff, you hear God’s Word brought into many conversations with the teens.  As you stay for Bible/Talk time, you see the teens settle down and the Word of God taught and shared.  As you watch teens disciplined, you see how it is done completely with the use of Law and Gospel.  If you visit the ROC, you will appreciate how we are able to share the Gospel with so many teens who have been without it all their lives and how Christian teens have a perfect opportunity to live and share their faith.  Is it all worth it?  Absolutely!

The third annual ROC Rummage Sale will be on Friday and Saturday, July 21+22.  Call Ruth Uttech 920-261-6772 or Pam Erdman at 920-261-9674 to volunteer your help and for more information.  Also, plan on enjoying a brat, chips and soda at Glenn’s Brat Stand and help fund the ROC on Saturday, August 12th, 10:00-3:00.

Remember, you can stop by at the ROC anytime it’s open to visit or be considered for our volunteer staff.  Your gifts are also greatly appreciated and needed.  Thanks so much for your support.

(AUGUST-2006) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC     For this and several more “Pebbles From The ROC” we have asked teens, who attend our THE ROC Youth Center, to share their thoughts as to what THE ROC means to them and what it has done for them.  We feel it is important for all of us to see that THE ROC is touching real lives and real people.  This time we hear from Tyler who is a member of one of our congregations but hasn’t attended church much at all in the past.  Tyler writes, “When I first came to THE ROC, one thing I had a lot of trouble with was my anger.  It was so bad that I was in counseling for it.  Twice I had to be sent out of THE ROC because of my anger.  PT (Pastor Mueller) helped me by showing me it was a sin against God but that Jesus died so that I would be forgiven.  Before that, I always blamed the anger on someone else or on my disabilities.  I have changed a lot and no longer need anger counseling because of how fully the staff forgave me and, most of all, because of Jesus who died for me.  Also, I have been made fun of by other kids all my life.  At THE ROC I love how I am important and  treated with respect.”

The “Jerry Kastens Memorial Golf Outing for The ROC” was another huge success even though we once again were rained on.  The outing will have raised over $10,100.00, the most ever, after matching funds from the Jefferson County Thrivent Branch and WELS Kingdom Workers Living Waters branch are received.  Thank you to everyone who helped and participated.

Also, plan on enjoying a brat, chips and soda at Glenn’s Brat Stand and help fund the ROC on Saturday, August 12th, 10:00-3:00.  Please note the date change.

Remember, you can stop by at the ROC anytime it’s open to visit or be considered for our volunteer staff.  Your gifts are also greatly appreciated and needed.  Thanks so much for your support.

(SEPTEMBER-2006) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC     For this “Pebbles From The ROC” we continue to hear from  teens who attend our ROC Youth Center.  We feel it is important for all of us to see that THE ROC is touching real lives and real people.  This time we hear from Michelle who was completely unchurched and has been coming to THE ROC almost from the beginning.  Michelle writes, I just want to tell you how “The ROC” changed me.  I first started to come to THE ROC when I was in high school.  I was a real mess.  I didn’t have a job, my dad didn’t and still doesn’t care about me, I was failing high school and in trouble with the law.  Now after three years I have a job, am an older junior volunteer at the ROC and have and graduated from high school. The ROC was there for me emotionally and spiritually. The ROC was there when my mom past away three years ago. When I was feeling down, the director and staff were there to listen to what was wrong and gave me guidance and advice. I recently was confirmed in a WELS church and feel great to be a part of a church family.  Most of al,l I’m thankful God forgives me, through Christ,  for all the wrongs I’ve done.   I feel that the ROC is there to help teens in trouble like me.  It helped me to get over grief and sadness. The teens need the help that only God’s Word can give.”

Our thanks to Michelle for sharing her thoughts.  Also, we greatly thank all who helped with the recent rummage sale.  $6,013 was raised for the ROC.  There were 700 hours of volunteer hours of which 86 were given by the ROC teens.  We are overwhelmed with the generosity.  The adults and teens that helped with the Brat Stand, which raised about $1,000, were also fantastic.  Finally, how proud we are of the teens who totally rearranged the ROC to make it more spacious and inviting.  All are invited to come into the ROC to see the new look.

(NOVEMBER-2006) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC     For this “Pebbles From The ROC” we continue to hear from  teens who attend our ROC Youth Center.  This time we hear from Logan and thank him for his thoughts.  Logan writes:

I have been going to The ROC since it opened, and I know that many people, including myself were drawn to it because of Pastor Mueller's warm and welcoming personality. Pastor Mueller brought us into his life, so we wanted to show that we welcomed him into our lives as well. We fondly nicknamed him P.T., which stands for Pastor Tim. I am very happy to have P.T. around as a friend and a mentor, but for many he has become a father figure that many people have been looking for all their lives.

I go to Luther Prep, and have gone to a private Lutheran grade school all my life, so it was a shock to be around so many people who could have cared less about religion. P.T. has been an awesome example of how important we all are in God's eyes. In his own unique way, he helped me let my faith shine around people who don't have one. Pastor Mueller and his actions have had such a strong effect on me that I have gone from not considering becoming a pastor, to making it my life goal and something I look forward to. I'm not the only one who P.T. has influenced, I have seen some of my fellow teens go from being people who didn't care about anything at all, to opening the doors and saying hello when people come in. It's amazing for me to see first hand what P.T. has accomplished using The Gospel. What can be more rewarding?

I feel that P.T. and all of my friends at The ROC are part of God's way of taking my life in a different direction than what I had originally been planning. God has blessed P.T. with amazing talents that have helped so many people since The ROC opened. In doing this, a better future for Watertown is being developed every day. We have all become one big family at The ROC, everyone is welcome and accepted (with the guidance of P. T. on occasion) and I am glad to be a part of it.

We sincerely thank everyone for their continued support of THE ROC mission and ministry.  Due to your special and generous gifts to THE ROC, no money has ever been taken out from any general church budget although the churches have planned and promised such support.  Please remember that you can stop by at the ROC anytime it’s open to visit or be considered for our volunteer staff.  Also, you can check with Pastor Mueller if you would like to donate goodies, a wish list item or a special talent you have such as singing, game playing and the like.  The teens love the involvement of the adults.  Once again, thanks so much for your support.

(DECEMBER-2006) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC

How thankful we are for the many blessings God continues to pour out on our ROC mission and ministry.  Our Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center (ROC) for Youth, located at 321 S. Water St., opened three years ago on December 3, 2003.  As we look back on the last three years, we give thanks to God for the Gospel of salvation in Christ and how hundreds of teenagers have heard that Gospel at THE ROC.   We thank our Lord for how He, through the Gospel, has changed many teenagers from living for themselves to living for Christ.  We thank our Lord for each one of you as you continue to greatly and generously support of THE ROC.

We also thank our Lord for the building and site that we have been using for the last three years.  What a blessing that we have not had to pay rent but only the owner’s taxes for the land and building.  Lately, however, due to publicity about the river development, many of you have been asking about the future plans for the location of THE ROC.  It doesn’t seem as though those plans will develop in the near future.  Nevertheless, we all need to keep our eyes and ears open for another future location.  Maybe there is someone out there, who can provide such a location or knows someone who can.  Please let us know if you hear anything.  Stop by or call Pastor Mueller (206-9581) or Chairman Don Bartz (261-1319).

Always remember that you can stop by at the ROC anytime it’s open to visit or be considered for our volunteer staff.  Also, you can check with Pastor Mueller if you would like to donate goodies, a wish list item or a special talent you have such as singing, game playing and the like.  The teens love the involvement of the adults.  Once again, thanks so much for your support.

(JANUARY-2007) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC

What a joy it was to see the article in The Watertown Daily Times on December 2nd about our Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center (ROC) for Youth.  It was even a greater joy to read the quotes by teens who have attended THE ROC concerning how THE ROC has impacted them and their lives.  What, of course, did not show up in the article but far more important, is how the Gospel has impacted them eternally.  Oh, how we celebrate God’s grace, and how, by that love and forgiveness in Christ, we have so many teens who have become our friends for eternity.

During the Christmas season, we celebrated Christ’s birth by taking a good number of ROC teens to the movie, “The Nativity”, which was offered to us for free by the Watertown Towne Cinema.  Our celebration continued as we further studied the events of Christ’s birth at our Bible/Talk Times.  A Christmas Party and gift exchange was also enjoyed by teens and parents on Sat., Dec. 23rd.

Everyone is asked to mark on their calendars Saturday, March 31st when we are planning a ROC Banquet/Benefit.  The event will include some entertainment, a catered meal at 5:00 p.m., a brief ROC presentation, a few other brief presentations, and the opportunity to support THE ROC.  Look for more information soon so that you can be sure to get a seat.

(FEBRUARY-2007) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC

What a blessing it was to be able to take about 35 ROC teens to the movie “The Nativity” on Saturday, December 16th at the Towne Cinema as the owners of the cinema provided it for free.  We were pleasantly surprised that most of the teens were unchurched and a good number had attended because our ROC Christian teens invited them.  Later on, at a Bible/Talk Time, we were able to compare the movie to the truth of Scripture and center on the Gospel of salvation in Christ all the more.  Thanks to Todd Morris for setting up the event.

We invite everyone to the first annual ROC Banquet/Benefit, “Swing into Action” on Saturday, March 31, 2007 @ 5:00 pm at the Luther Prep Auditorium (Western Avenue and College Street).  By this event, we seek to provide updated information about the ROC, good fellowship, exciting entertainment and an opportunity for all to support the ROC.   You will soon find an insert in your bulletins providing more information and how to RSVP.  We encourage you to reserve your place immediately as there will be limited seating.

The main way we help the teens who attend the ROC and share God’s Word with them is by first building strong relationships of trust.  Among many, one way we do this is through an after school activity time on Wednesdays which was recently implemented.  From 3:00-4:15 p.m., we provide homework help, play table games and work on a craft with the teens.  Besides volunteering to help supervise the ROC, you are invited to volunteer to organize a craft for the teens.  Call Pastor Mueller at 261-4444 or 206-9581 for more information or to volunteer.  Thanks again for your support.

(MARCH-2007) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC

Everyday our gracious Lord continues to shower blessings upon our Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center (ROC) for Youth.  Besides the generous gifts given to fund the ROC, neighbors and friends continue to stop by with special gifts such as Bible video games, goodies and treats, video games, the installation of a TV antenna, an air-hockey table, the equipment and installation of a security system and the like.  The last time it snowed, someone (we still don’t know who) plowed the parking lot.  Also, someone signed the ROC up at www.goodsearch.com.  Punch in THE ROC under the charity and each time you use this search engine on the internet, $0.01 goes to the ROC.  Thank you also to all the volunteers who help supervise and support the ROC.  We can’t keep it open without you.

We invite everyone to the ROC Banquet/Benefit, “Swing into Action” on Saturday, March 31, 2007 @ 5:00 pm at the Luther Prep Auditorium (Western Avenue and College Street).  By this event, we seek to provide updated information about the ROC, good fellowship, exciting entertainment and an opportunity for all to support the ROC.   A registration form has been provided.  You can also stop at the church office or the ROC to pick a form up.  In order to keep the cost of the meal down, anyone who would like to donate a dessert for the banquet is asked to call Pastor Mueller at 206-9581 to let him know.  We thank Mayor John David for planning to attend and share a few remarks.  We encourage everyone to reserve a place immediately as there will be limited seating.  Thank you.

(APRIL-2007) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC

In order to further build relationships of trust and provide Gospel outreach opportunities, we have begun an after-school program (every Wednesday) at our Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center (ROC) for Youth.  This social, interactive time (3:00-4:15 p.m.) involves helping teens with their homework, a craft project and/or a table game.  None of the regular games or computers are used.  This time has turned out to be extremely valuable as so many positive and Christian principles are learned and practiced.  We, however, need your help. Some monies have been given to fund this after-school program which we would like to use to provide a variety of projects and crafts from various people.  If there is a craft or project you would like to do with the teens, please call Pastor Mueller at 261-4444 or 206-9581.  Make the call.  Thank you.

Another way someone can help is by helping us get or paint new outside signs (4’x8’) for the ROC.  The two we have are rotting and chipping away.  Your gifts to the ROC are always appreciated.  Remember, also, that the ROC is an approved organization for the Thrivent GivingPlus® Program.  This means that Thrivent will contribute $1 for every $2 donated by Thrivent members to the Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center (ROC) For Youth up to a  $300 maximum supplement.  Thrivent members can give to two approved organizations a year for matching.  Consider such a gift for matching for the ROC if you aren’t fully using this program yet.  Pick up a GivingPlus® form at the ROC today.

(MAY-2007) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC      The following article was written by Todd Morris, a member of one of our churches and an adult volunteer at our ROC YOUTH CENTER.

During a “talk time” in February, PT (Pastor Mueller) was discussing how there is nothing we as sinners can do to get into heaven, as it is only by grace, through faith in Jesus, our Savior. I decided to play the devil’s advocate, and comment “PT, so you are telling us that if I be as good as I can be, be kind and helpful to others, BUT not believe in Jesus, I can’t get into Heaven?” Several of the unchurched teens started jeering me, “that’s just stupid, why would you even say that?” PT went on to explain that there ARE people who unfortunately DO believe in doing good works and trying to be “perfect” to get into Heaven. Several times later that night, and a couple of times since, two of the “regular” unchurched ROC teens have come up and mimicked me in a nerdy voice saying, “you’re telling me that if I be as good as I can, BUT not believe in Jesus, I can’t get into Heaven?” Knowing it’s all said in fun, I just laugh and take it in stride as they continue, “Todd you’re such a dork, there’s no way anyone is that stupid”. What I’m really thinking at this point is, WHAT A GREAT GIFT GOD HAS GIVEN THESE KIDS THROUGH THE WORK AT THE ROC!  Four years ago, these two teens in particular knew very little to nothing about how to end up in Heaven, let alone anything about Jesus. Through the Word of God being taught at the ROC, plus the examples of love and forgiveness being displayed everyday there, they have come to know the only way to heaven, which is through Christ, and not works.  Even though there are kids at the ROC who don’t necessarily believe in Jesus right now, they are learning who Christ is and what it is to be a Christian.  At another “talk time” near the end of March, PT was leading a closing prayer, and followed up by adding the Lord’s Prayer at the end. I got a little emotional as we progressed through the Prayer, as I could here so many of the teens joining in praying the Lord’s Prayer with us. There were more kids praying the Prayer than I have ever heard before! When it was over, I took a quick head count to see how many WELS kids were in the crowd. Of the 19-20 kids, only 5 were connected to a WELS church, and I would estimate of the remaining 14-15, less than 5 others have been churched at all. Most of these kids have learned the Lord’s Prayer solely at the ROC - Wow!

I think most people who live in Watertown, but didn’t grow up here, would agree that it is hard and difficult being accepted into certain social circles. Being involved with the ROC has opened many new avenues to different people, events, and activities. Most of all, it has been very rewarding seeing teens change from being distant and untrusting of PT and the ROC staff, to considering us their friends. I welcome all of our WELS members to join me in becoming friends, as well as Christian mentors to these ROC teens. You can’t imagine how much it will enrich your life!

(JUNE-2007) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC    What a blessed and growing time the teens had at Ponderosa as they learned how to show love to God and others by their hard work.  The teens learned what it means to be faithful and dependable with a strong work ethic and to volunteer out of love.  New ROC t-shirts were proudly worn by the hard working teens. Donations for more t-shirts ($11.00 each) for the next event would be greatly appreciated.  $466.00 was raised for the ROC through this event.  Thank you to all who participated.  The ROC teens will again help the ROC by having a Brat Stand at WalMart on Saturday, June 9th from 11:00-2:00 p.m.  Stop in and see them at work.

Remember the ROC GOLF EVENT is scheduled for Sunday, June 24th, at the Watertown Country Club with a 4:30 pm tee time. It will again be a 9 hole scramble with 5 person teams.  We would love to have any non-golfers attend the buffet following the golfing for a cost of $15.00.  A silent auction and sponsoring of holes is also part of the outing.  Sign up deadline for golf and meal is Tuesday, June 19th. All proceeds go to The ROC. Any question, any other inquires or to register, please contact Dale Ninmann at 920-261-5719 or e-mail daleninmann@charter.net.

Also, please prepare for the ROC Rummage Sale to be held on July 19, 20 & 21 at Trinity/St. Luke’s School.  Please call Ruth Uttech (920-261-6772) or Pam Erdman (920-261-9674) with any questions regarding what we can accept or to indicate your willingness to volunteer. (Sorry but we have no place to store items until the sale.)  Note: This year we will begin receiving on Sunday July 15 so that we can run the sale for 3 days rather than the 2 days we have done in the past.  Of the approximately 700 hours put in by the volunteers last year, most of the time spent was for accepting donations, sorting and organizing them for the sale.  Volunteers are greatly needed.  To volunteer or for more info., call Ruth Uttech 920-261-6772 or Pam Erdman at 920-261-9674.

Remember, you can stop by at the ROC anytime it’s open to visit or be considered for our volunteer staff.  Your gifts are also greatly appreciated and needed.  Thanks so much for your support.  Contact info. for THE ROC and Pastor/Director Mueller:  920-261-4444 or 920-206-9581 or wttnroc@sbcglobal.net.

(JULY-2007) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC    Anger is very prevalent among young people today.  We know the sinful nature, which we all have, produces anger and hate.  That sinful nature, producing anger and hate, shows itself so well today due to severe anger being displayed as an example by parents, a message of anger and hate being promoted everywhere and broken homes leaving the children alone and often feeling rejected.  At the ROC, we rely on God’s law and the Gospel of love and forgiveness in Christ, to make the difference, and it does.  A teen told me recently that before he came to the ROC, he was in fights all the time but now he hasn’t been in a fight for over a year.  We don’t hold back with the law that condemns and we don’t hold back with the sweet Gospel that forgives and motivates.  Loving Christ, “Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry” (Ephesians 4:26).

Continue to get ready for the ROC Rummage Sale to be held on July 19, 20 & 21 at Trinity/St.

The number of volunteers is seriously low right now.  Your gifts are also greatly appreciated and needed.  Thanks so much for your support.  Contact info. for THE ROC and Pastor/Director Mueller:  920-261-4444 or 920-206-9581 or wttnroc@sbcglobal.net.

(AUGUST-2007) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC          We thank our Lord God for the Gospel of His love and forgiveness in Christ, by which we are saved and which has touched the hearts of so many at our Recreation and Outreach Center (ROC) for Youth.  A new wave of teens has started coming to the ROC, as those who have just finished sixth grade (now considered in seventh) are allowed to attend.  As the number of unchurched attending the ROC continues to be well over 50%, we are thankful and excited to be able to share the Gospel with so many who haven’t heard it before.

We are also thankful to our Lord for all those who worked so hard on the golf outing for the ROC.  Thanks also to those who donated the auction and door prize items and sponsored the holes.  Thanks to WELS Kingdom Workers for financially sponsoring the event and also Thrivent for the matching funds.  The total raised for THE ROC was a new high at $11,000.

$774.70 was the total for THE ROC as WalMart matched the $387.35 which came from the Brat Stand we had there on June 9th.

The ROC teens along with adult supervisors, will be at Glenn’s Brat Stand on Friday and Saturday, August 17th and 18th, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Stop by to have lunch and at the same time support THE ROC.  Adults are asked to call Pastor Mueller at 206-9581 to volunteer to help.

Remember, you can stop by at the ROC anytime it’s open to visit or be considered for our volunteer staff.  Your gifts are also greatly appreciated and needed.  Thanks so much for your support.

(September-2007) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC        At a Bible/Talk Time at the ROC, which is held everyday the ROC is open, eternal life in Christ and the resurrection were being discussed.  The teens were encouraged to consider that life in Christ everyday as they use such things as the butterfly (from a cocoon) and the lily (from a bulb) to remind them of that life.  One ROC teen asked if one of the perennials in the flower boxes on the outside wall of the ROC could be in memory of her mother.  The ROC teen and her mother came to trust in Christ through the Word of God proclaimed at the ROC.  Her mother died not long after she had heard the Gospel.  How thankful we are that the teen and her mother heard and believed the words, "’Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?’  The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:54-56)

We thank our Lord everyday for your help and support.

Also, we greatly thank all who helped with the recent rummage sale.  $6,400 was raised for the ROC.  After the matching funds are received from Thrivent and WELS Kingdom Workers, the total will be approximately $10,000.  There were also approximately 900 volunteer hours given for the rummage sale.  We are truly overwhelmed with the generosity.

(October-2007) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC       In order to share with you what is happening at our ROC (Recreation & Outreach Center for Youth) and to encourage others to volunteer, thoughts from the teens and volunteers have been included in the Pebbles from the ROC.  This month, Janine Petri, a ROC volunteer and member of Hope Lutheran in Oconomowoc, shares her thoughts:  Sometimes waiting for signs of growth in faith can be hard but we thank our Lord for his love and patience as he allows us to rejoice over that growth.  We have seen many of the teens at the ROC grow in their faith and love for God over time. Some still leave before Bible/Talk time while others stay and ask questions. On Friday nights, Bible/Talk time is later so a number of teens choose to leave but the remaining teens engage in even more meaningful conversations about God’s Word. Some teens, who haven’t been at the ROC all night, have come just for Talk Time. We see teens change who they hang out with. There have also been a number of occasions where teens have shared their faith and guided the actions of each other.  Praise God that He is so patient with us and doesn’t give up on us.

The ROC has become a place where the teens know we won’t give up on them.  We are, however, in great need of volunteers.  We hope that shortage will be corrected so that it doesn’t threaten the center.  Please give volunteering a try by calling Pastor Mueller at 261-4444 or 206-9581.  Thank you so much.

(November-2007) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC          At a recent Bible/Talk Time at the ROC, the teens were asked, “How do you get to heaven?” Out of the thirty-five teens in attendance, five didn’t believe there is a heaven and twenty-five believed you have to be good and keep the commandments.  The teens were then asked if they believed they would go to heaven.  Just about all of them were unsure even though some felt they would probably go to heaven because they weren’t like murderers.  After showing how all of us have fallen short, what a joy it was to direct them away from themselves to focus on Christ.  Using the cross, the punishment for their sin was revealed and eternal life was made sure.  We wonder how many of those teens we will now see in heaven due to the grace of God given through that Bible/Talk Time.

On Saturday, October 13th, the teens were again busy as they participated in cleaning the ROC.  It was good to see so many attend showing how they care about the ROC.  Look for the ROC teens to again show how they care as they work at Ponderosa the evening of Thursday, Nov. 8th.  All tips and donations, along with a percentage of the sales that evening will be given to the ROC.

We sincerely thank everyone for their continued support of THE ROC mission and ministry.  Your generous gifts make it possible to continue this mission to the youth.

(December-2007) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC          The following is written by Curtis Mallow from St. Paul’s in Ixonia.  Curits is a ROC volunteer and encourages all to call him (920-988-1266) for information or questions concerning volunteering at THE ROC.

A couple weeks ago as I got ready to go and do my shift at the ROC, I was tired and the thought of staying home and watching a movie sounded very tempting. Fortunately for me, it was to be a quiet night because of the homecoming dance at the high school. One of our regulars was in, one of those guys that are way too cool to go to a homecoming dance. This young man did have a bit of a “bad boy” image, as he has had some “run ins” with the local police. About a year ago he nearly lost his life in a single vehicle crash that left him pinned under a vehicle that turned out to be stolen. He’s since made a full recovery physically, but remains difficult at times, and occasionally needs a firm but loving hand to guide him. (PT does that so well)

During a game of pool and small talk, I couldn’t help but notice there was a young lady he was interested in, and she was planning on going to the homecoming dance with, or without him. I teased him a bit; “it’s a shame that you’re too cool for the dance, you just may have had a good time.” We finished our game and went about our business.

About a half hour later the phone rang and it was this young man, wanting to know if I knew how to tie a tie, I said I did, and he hung up. Another ten minutes passed and the phone rang again, now he was in the parking lot and wanted me to come out there to tie his tie for him, as he didn’t know how. (and of course didn’t want to tarnish that image he’s worked so hard to create.) So out to the parking lot I went, and was surprised to see his parents out there with him, camera in hand, ready to mark this special occasion. The young man was smiling from ear to ear and had a hard time hiding his own excitement about going to this “lame” homecoming dance.

Funny thing about this whole story is that as I walked back into the ROC, I wasn’t the least bit tired. In fact, I was pretty charged up about what I had just witnessed, and it had nothing to do with me, and everything to do with what the ROC is all about. To just be there and witness to these kids about what it is like to have Jesus in your life. Sometimes by just showing up, sometimes by something we might say, and sometimes by being available to tie a tie for a young man who is still searching. Little stories like this are what keep me coming back, week after week.

(JANUARY-2008) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC     Recently a family felt compelled to write the following letter about our Watertown Recreation and Outreach Center (THE ROC) for Youth.  We felt it needed to be shared with all of you as it speaks volumes.  Please note that the boy referred to as John, along with his family, is completely unchurched.

Dear Pastor Mueller and ROC Board,

These are some of the reasons our son John says he likes about going to the ROC.  1) John likes to hear God’s Word  2) John likes to pray  3) John enjoys playing the games 4) John enjoys being with other kids  5) John loves God and being at a place that promotes God  6) John likes the pizza 7) Pastor Mueller is very nice to John, and John likes P.T. (Pastor Mueller) too. 8)  John says he is happy at the ROC.

As John’s parents, we are delighted that John enjoys the ROC.  We feel it is a safe and rewarding environment for Jo
